Busking In Surfers Paradise

Surfers Paradise is cradle and showroom to the Gold Coast's finest busking and street performance talent and the epicentre of southeast Queensland's street performance culture.

Musicians, magicians, puppeteers and escapologists all use the busy streets of Surfers Paradise as a stage from which to dazzle and delight enthusiastic crowds of passers-by.

Each year within the Surfers Paradise Festival, the precinct also hosts the Australian Street Entertainment Championships, a three-stage event that attracts some of the best street performers from around the world.

Application Process - AUGUST to October

1. Complete the busking application form and fax to Surfers Paradise Alliance (07) 5538 8210 by Friday 1st August, 2014.

2. Successful applicants will be notified by email or phone by Friday 8th August, 2014.

3. Auditions will be held at Surfers Paradise Alliance offices (Rooftop, Surfers Paradise Transit Centre, 10 Beach Road, Surfers Paradise QLD 4217) on Thursday 14th August, 2014. Auditions will be limited to 3 minutes.  Please ensure your auditions includes the key elements of your act.

4. Successful busking applicants will be notified by email and advised of payment and collection details.

All busking must comply with the busking guidelines.  Please read the guidelines carefully before applying.

 

FREQuently asked Questions

Are there designated busking locations?

Buskers can perform in designated spots throughout the precinct, which you will be advised of when you receive your permit. Each designated spot is suited to a different style of busking, depending on size requirements. Buskers can occupy a site for one hour at a time.

Do I have to audition?

It is necessary that you audition for a busking permit to ensure that your performance passes all risk analysis and does not cause any nuiances to locals, tourists and businesses. Once you have a busking permit, you only have to audition once a year or when your act is changed or modified.

Can I sell CDs or merchandise?

No, you can't sell any CDs, merchandise or articles as part of your busking performance. Nor can your performance 'demand' or 'ask' for money from spectators. Busking contributions are seen as a donation only in exchange for enjoying the performance.

What is the cost for a busking permit?

Busking permits are issued every three months. The three month busking permit is $84.  

What are the busking periods?

September to November, December to February, March to May and June to August.
